The man’s body was found at a depth of -1100 meters on August 3 by the speleological group of the Perovsky Club from Moscow, who had been working in the Veryovkina cave for 30 years.
At the bottom of the entrance well, they found trekking poles, climbing equipment, then at a depth of -600 meters they found a single tent, and at a depth of -1100 meters they found a body hanging on a rope.
As it turned out later, the corpse had been there since November 2020. The cavers informed the authorities of Abkhazia, abandoned the research expedition and invited cavers from the Union of Voluntary Cave Rescuers and the Union of Cavers of Russia.
Thanks to the actions of speleologists, in a short time with the assistance of the authorities of Abkhazia, the Russian public search organisation “LizaAlert” and the search and rescue squad “Irbis”, the identity of the person was established. A man, a resident of the city of Sochi, 37 years old, a climber, a lover of traveling alone. In November 2020, he left his wife and two children at home, did not tell about his route, and left in his car.
The wife asked the cavers to bring her husband’s body to the surface. The Abkhazian authorities gave permission to carry out evacuation work. The participation of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation currently has legal obstacles as Abkhazia is an independent state.
Now cavers are equipping the cave to transport the body. The cave is very difficult and requires a very high level of skill, as well as knowledge of the features of this cave. The work is not only painstaking, but also expensive.
