About the Organization
The National Cave Rescue Commission (NCRC) provides specialized cave rescue training and shares essential knowledge, skills, and resources for effective cave rescue. It is a volunteer group focused on training and tracking cave rescue resources across the United States. NCRC is not a functional rescue team; It is a training organization that offers training and development opportunities for individuals and organizations. NCRC represents the U.S. National Speleological Society on cave rescue training and operations issues.
Through quality training and public education that stresses stewardship and conservation, we strive to facilitate the best possible outcomes for those in need.
Karst and Caves
America has a wide variety of caves. These include caves in limestone, sandstone, lava, marble, and dirt. There are caves in every state. America has the longest mapped cave in the world, Mammoth Cave, which is currently mapped to 685 km. America has 20 caves mapped to at least 50 km. America has two lava caves that are over 1 km deep. Its deepest limestone cave is 755 meters deep.
Insurance
Cave rescues may have very different costs based on the location and the organizations involved. Cavers and cave rescuers should have their own insurance. They should not expect to be reimbursed for any expenses.
