About us
The Cave Rescue Units of Bergwacht Bayern are specialised rescue teams of the Bavarian Mountain Rescue Service. As part of the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK), Bergwacht Bayern is responsible for rescue operations in alpine terrain, difficult ground, canyons and caves throughout Bavaria.
Cave rescue has been an official task of Bergwacht Bayern since the early 2000s and is carried out by specially trained cave rescue specialists.
The organisation combines mountain rescue experience with specialised underground rescue techniques. Members are active cavers and mountain rescuers who receive additional training in cave rigging, underground casualty care, communications and stretcher transport in complex cave systems.
Area of Responsibility
Bergwacht Bayern provides cave rescue coverage throughout the Free State of Bavaria, including the Bavarian Alps, Franconian Jura and Bavarian Forest regions.
Regional cave rescue groups operate in both Southern and Northern Bavaria and can be mobilised for incidents ranging from recreational caving accidents to large scale underground rescue operations.

Organisation
Cave rescue specialists are integrated into the structure of Bergwacht Bayern and work closely with local mountain rescue teams, emergency medical services, police authorities and international cave rescue organisations.
The organisation is divided into regional cave rescue groups, supported by specialised equipment caches and trained personnel.
During major incidents, resources can be reinforced by cave rescue teams from across Germany and Europe through established cooperation networks and international rescue partnerships.
